Above all, time flew by. That happens when you have fun.  Certainly we had action packed days. However, there was plenty of time to prepare each evening for the next day. The staff presentations. The candidate classroom-, confined water- and open water presentations. The workshops. The exams. The lunches. The jokes. The smiles.  We all shared it together. Learned from it and are now ready to spill these beans to the PADI examiner.

PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven

PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven

PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven

Here it is, the PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven. This still dates back to the February 2019 PADI IDC on Malapascua. Certainly good times at PADI 5* IDDR Resort ‘Thresher Cove’.

First of all, Steven is the quiet one, sitting in the corner. He just seems to be observing. Secondly, he already completed his Divemaster course at Thresher Cove. A home boy, so to speak! Thirdly, he killed all his presentations. Quiet but his take in is marvelous. Nothing needed to be explained twice to him. Despite him being French, he understood everything superbly well in English.

Most certainly Steven is one of the easiest IDC candidates I ever worked with. Not only that, at the end of the IE party, he confessed his true and endless love to me! At least alcohol had no influence on that! We did all have a good laugh though. And more importantly, good times!
Within a week I will be back on Malapascua, for the November 2019 PADI IDC. Steven is one of the instructors at the resort. Absolutely looking forward seeing him again.

PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven

PADI IDC Testimonial by Steven

Steven with PADI Examiner Sophia. He just completed very successfully his PADI IE on Malapascua.

Without further ado, here’s Steven’s testimonial. Get your French reading glasses out tough;

Thanks for taking the time out to write this testimonial, Steve. It’s much appreciated.

PADI Adaptive techniques course at Thresher Cove Resort

We offer the PADI Adaptive techniques course at Thresher Cove Resort. It’s a new course and well worth getting certified in.

First of all this course focuses on increasing awareness of varying diver abilities. Secondly, explores adaptive teaching techniques to apply when training and diving with physically and mentally challenged divers.

For example, you will learn the best way to understand the limitations these divers have.  In other words, you get to role play being blindfolded. In addition you may have to execute skills with only one arm or leg being used. We try to make this course as realistic as we can.

PADI Adaptive techniques course at Thresher Cove Resort

Are you that PADI Professional who wants to become more aware of individual considerations when working with people who have physical or mental challenges? Certainly this is the course that you have been looking for.

PADI Adaptive techniques course at Thresher Cove Resort

Are you a PADI Divemaster or PADI Master Freediver? Have completed an EFR Primary and Secondary Care course within 24 months? This makes you eligible to take the PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty course.

Here is what the PADI  Specialty course will help you with:

  • First of all you become more aware and mindful of individual considerations when introducing people with disabilities to diving or freediving.
  • Secondly you explore adaptive techniques that can be applied while supervising and training divers or freedivers with disabilities in PADI courses and programs.

  • Last but not least. Learn additional techniques to motivate and encourage student divers with mental and/or physical challenges.

This course consists of a knowledge development section. We also add two confined water skill development workshops. On top of that, there are also two open water workshops. They are fun and you will learn loads!

PADI Self Reliant diver course at Thresher Cove Resort

PADI Self Reliant diver course at Thresher Cove Resort

We offer the PADI Self Reliant diver course at Thresher Cove Resort. First of all to recognize and accept the role of the buddy system and its contributions to diver safety. Secondly to identify and develop self-reliance and independence while diving.

There are two reasons for an experienced diver to take the Self-Reliant diver course:
• To develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a partner. When this is preferred or necessary.
• To sharpen skills of diving self-reliance. It will make you, as a diver a stronger partner in a dive pair or team.

Certainly PADI instructors should be looking for this certification! For example, you are responsible as an instructor for the safety of all of your students. On the other hand, will all of your students be able to help you if need arises?

In other words, get certified at self reliant diver level with Camille after your PADI IDC with us. After that you’re only one more training dive away from becoming a PADI self reliant instructor.

Self reliant training at diver level includes 3 open water dives. Among others you will learn how to deploy an SMB during your safety stop. As a result you can enjoy the Malapascua marine life on your own, without the masses!

 In order to join this PADI course, you need to meet a few prerequisites. To clarify what they are;

  • First of all be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. Likewise, if you have a qualifying certification from another training organization, that will do as well.
  • Secondly, you need to have logged a minimum of 100 dives.
  • Thirdly, be 18 years of age or older.
  • Fourth, successfully complete a dive skills assessment by a PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor.

  • Surface marker buoy, such as a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) or lift bag with at least 30 metres/100 feet of line.
  • Redundant gas source – pony cylinder, twin cylinders with isolation valve or sidemount configuration. Redundant gas supply must be configured so that the diver can access it with one hand.
  • A redundant depth gauge and bottom timer, or dive computer.
  • Two redundant surface signaling devices (both visual and audible)
  • Knife/cutting tool (except where locally prohibited)
  • Slate and pencil

Nudibranchs around Malapascua dive sites

Nudibranchs around Malapascua dive sites are out in numbers! Besides the obvious thresher shark bucket list, there’s more to discover! First of all, plenty of nudibranchs. Secondly, don’t forget the sea slugs. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference and a fish id site comes in very handy.

Nowadays fish id sites are almost easier and faster compared to old style photo books.  More importantly, the digital sites seem to be very precise. If you are a Facebook user, try searching for ‘fish id’.  On the other hand, don’t ditch the fish id books immediately. They still remain a welcome source of information. Lots of work and love for the underwater world have gone into them!

Have a look at some of the dive sites around Malapascua here.
